A Walk at 6:30 AM

In the golden morning light the morning doves sing their song softly and the only human addition is the percussion of the stroller wheels rolling along the asphalt. The golden light begins its task of reaching into the world below, running its fingers through the grass and the leaves on the trees, making it all golden. Growing fawns stand in the light as the sun shows off their white specks of youth. One continues to lie in the grass, its ears perked and seen just above the tops of the blades.

We say good morning to the world that has already awakened and continues to wake with us. We get to the water and our feet make the first prints of the day on the sand.

“Good morning, water.”

“Hi!” the voice of my child exclaims gleefully as the soft waves tickle his toes. His exclamation is repeated as every new wave welcomes him to the day.

After running along the shore and letting the water gift us with its morning greeting, we leave with sandy fee and a soft farewell.

And there in the morning light we pause and notice the light continuing to extend its fingers, now cupping most of the land in its hand. In the pause, our eyes meet with a deer’s - standing in the lightened shadows of the forest. The leaves form a window where our eyes connect and two worlds connect as well. I bring my child up on my hip and he joins in the connection as, with a soft voice, I whisper into his cheek, “good morning, deer.”

Our friend jumps away leaving a smile across my child’s lips and invoking a giggle from his spirit followed by a soft “bye”.

In the golden morning light the morning doves sing their song softly, and we join in the song and the awakening of the earth.
